What makes crypto taxation different
With crypto, taxable events arise more often than with stocks: exchanging one crypto for another is also a disposal. It makes sense to start keeping records from your first purchase.
The tax rules described here apply to individuals who are tax residents in Finland. If you are taxed elsewhere, your own country’s rules apply.
Every exchange is a disposal
In Finland a crypto-asset is not a currency but property. That is why capital gains taxation applies every time a crypto-asset is exchanged for something else, not only when it is converted into euros.
- Selling for euros: a taxable disposal.
- Exchanging one crypto for another: a taxable disposal, even if no euros move.
- Paying with crypto: a taxable disposal at the value of the purchase.
- Transferring to your own wallet: not a disposal, because the owner does not change.
This is the most common surprise: active exchanging produces dozens of taxable events, even if you have never once withdrawn any euros.
Deemed acquisition cost
The gain is calculated as the difference between the sale price and the acquisition cost. Alternatively, you can use the deemed acquisition cost: 20% of the sale price, or 40% if you have owned the asset for at least ten years. The option that results in the smaller taxable gain is used.
The deemed cost is especially useful when the purchase price was very low or cannot be verified. Note that when you use the deemed cost, you cannot deduct your actual expenses separately.
Losses and small capital gains
Capital losses are deducted first from capital gains. If the losses exceed the gains, they can also be deducted from other capital income, and the unused part carries forward to the following years.
Small disposals are tax-free if the combined sale prices of all assets disposed of during the year stay below the limit the Finnish Tax Administration sets each year. The limit applies to sale prices, not to the gain.
Mining, staking and gifts
| Event | How it is taxed |
|---|---|
| Mining | The crypto-asset received is typically earned income at its value when received. Selling it later is a separate disposal. |
| Staking reward | Taxed as capital income at its euro value when received; that value also becomes the acquisition cost. |
| Gift | May be subject to gift tax. The recipient's acquisition cost is the value used for gift tax. |
| Inheritance | The value used for inheritance tax becomes the acquisition cost for a later disposal. |
The details and limits change. Check the current guidance in the Finnish Tax Administration's guide on crypto-assets before filing your tax return.
Record-keeping that saves work
Crypto taxation is laborious only if the information is missing. Record five things for every transaction, and your tax return will be straightforward.
