Bonds

For years interest rates were close to zero, and bond investing felt dull. Now the situation is different: rates have risen, and that makes bond investing interesting again.

Starting point

You lend money. You get paid for it.

Bond investing feels abstract to many people, but the core is everyday stuff. When you buy a bond, you lend money to a government or a company and in return you get interest and your capital back on the maturity date.

A bond ETF is not one product but a whole market.

This is where many people make their first mistake: they assume that bonds automatically mean a stable, low-risk investment. In reality the difference depends on two things: whose debt you invest in and how sensitive the investment is to changes in interest rates.
